Whoops

My mom called me today and told me that she wanted Isaac’s 7 month picture and that I hadn’t posted it. Well I thought that I had so I apologize for not doing so.

This month was a lot harder to get a picture of him with the paper in it. He was very intrigued by the paper and really just wanted to eat it. This is the best we could do in the paper visible/Isaac paying attention category. Thank goodness both of us were there to attempt this maneuver.

Get On Up!

By adam · Comments (0)
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

With Isaac now a man of the world, Erin and I had to find a way to contain him while still letting him see the world in his own way. We figured our best option was a back carry. Yes, the yogurt making, cloth diapering, baby wearing hippies decided to not only wear him up front, but to wrap him on their back as well.

Houston Babywearers

Fortunately, Erin found a group in the Houston area that is all about wearing their babies, so we went to a meet-up of theirs and got to know them. They’re great people and have already taught both of us a lot about wearing Isaac. They’re not solely about wearing their kid, they’re really just a group of friends who we’ve befriended. They get together for the day and talk shop, make crafts and just hang out.

Erin had watched YouTube videos of carries but wanted to get some hands-on experiences around people who knew what they were doing and could give her some advice that would be useful. As opposed to me, who has absolutely no idea what’s going on and would really just be telling her “Don’t drop him, don’t drop him, don’t drop him!” They definitely were a lot more knowledgeable than me.

Isaac on the BackApparently Erin was pretty good at it. She perfected the Double Hammock, or something like that. Me, on the other hand, well I was struggling. For anything. I couldn’t wrap Isaac using just our wrap because my arms aren’t flexible enough, so the group was nice enough to bring me some carriers I could try before we went out and dropped some real money on one. Here’s me trying a carrier called a Calyx.

Isaac in CalyxWe didn’t end up buying me a Calyx, but I did buy a Mei Tai that allows me to get Isaac up on my back high enough for him to see over my shoulders and I can get him up there on my own. So far he’s loved it. I wore him around Ikea when I had to go get some picture frames and I’m pretty sure every single person I passed looked at me.

Guess we’re just quite the duo, a cute kid and a weirdo with the kid on his back!

All Apologies

So…

The last few weeks I’ve really been slacking on this blog, but I promise there’s a good reason.

I have been starting up a new blog which Erin and I are hoping can generate some revenue and also help other stay at home parents. I’ve been posting over on www.hangingwithdad.com three times a week and I’ll still be posting here (I promise it will pick up soon), but I’d really appreciate if you visited Hanging with Dad as well, the more traffic I have the more I can charge for banner ads. It’s not completely built out, I’m still figuring out exactly what I want it to look like, but the basic framework is there.

Thank you to everyone for understanding.

6 Month Pictures

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Just recently we had Isaac’s 6 month pictures taken by Chubbyfoot Photography here in Houston. We got the pictures back the other day and wanted to share them with everyone. Isaac is so ridiculously cute it’s…ridiculous.

Trying Out New Foods

By adam · Comments (0)
Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Ever since his 6 month birthday, Isaac has been trying out new foods. We’ve gone through bananas, pears, peaches, prunes, oatmeal, rice cereal, avocado, butternut squash and sweet potatoes. There may be more but that’s all I can think of right now.

It’s been a hit and miss excursion. Rice cereal wasn’t a big hit, prunes were a HUGE hit the first time and a somewhat hit after, bananas were a miss as finger food and a huge hit as mush.

Here’s his first semi-solid (rice cereal).

Here’s prunes

Perhaps some butternut squash?

Or pears?

Now some avocado…

And finally, peaches.

All in all it’s been a fairly successful start to his solid eating life. He gets a meal of solids a little before his nightly bedtime routine. Some nights he’s completely into food, some nights he’s not so fond of it, depends on the night. What he always loves, however, is his spoon. It’s one of his favorite toys.

Our First Solids

By adam · Comments (0)
Friday, January 28th, 2011

Recently we’ve started Isaac on solids. I’ll have a whole other post about what he’s eaten so far, but that involves uploading lots of stuff to YouTube and a bit more in depth analysis, so we’ll start here.

We started Isaac off with rice cereal. It seems to be a staple for baby’s first food so we went with it. While he didn’t absolutely despise it, you could tell he was not too sure about non breast milk things being eaten. Not a big surprise since that’s all he’s had to eat for over 6 months. It wasn’t all bad though, he ate what we had (though probably half ended up on him in some form or fashion) and didn’t fuss too much.

After he finished his rice cereal we gave him the spoon to play with. We figure he’s going to be using utensils at some point in the future so he may as well get used to holding them and seeing how they work. Well, he’s going to have to learn how far into his mouth he can put a spoon because so far he has to be reminded every time that it does not go all the way in. Some day it will sink in. Until then we’ll just hope he doesn’t vomit (fingers crossed). But the spoon was a big hit, he played with it for probably 10-15 minutes until we decided it was time to clean him up and get ready for bed.

Since rice cereal we’ve branched out to sweet potatoes, avocado, oatmeal, pears, peaches and, most recently, prunes. But, as I said earlier, that’s to follow soon.

Until then, enjoy.

Meeting a New Friend (Girlfriend?)

By adam · Comments (0)
Friday, January 21st, 2011

Earlier this month, Isaac and I took dinner to my friend Erin and her husband as a “don’t bother cooking, just spend time with your new baby” gift. Erin and her husband, Travis, had a baby girl named Clara, and she’s really cute.

When Isaac woke up from his morning nap we hopped in the car and made the trip down to Manvel. We’d made a double bath of Rigatoni D the night before so we’d have plenty of leftovers for the Lyons.

Erin’s mom was there to greet us when we got there, and I got to meet their dog, Cash.  Apparently Cash is very fond of babies and wanted to lick Isaac. While I didn’t have a problem with it, they were understandably trying to keep Cash from getting all up in Clara’s face right now so we had to keep him somewhat away from Isaac.

Clara Lyons Crashed Out on MeIt was crazy holding Clara. I know Isaac was that little not that long ago, but it seems like a lifetime. She was so tiny! Clara was pretty tired, and when I took her from Erin she promptly fell asleep on me. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to get Isaac to just fall asleep on me like that. I miss it and hope maybe he’ll start doing it again.

While I held Clara, Erin and her mom had fun with Isaac.

Enjoy your time with Clara before she’s as big as Isaac, Erin. It’ll be sooner than you realize!

Before we left I had to get a picture of the two of them together. Who knows, it may be his first picture with an in-law. No pressure though.

Isaac and ClaraIsaac and Clara 2And yes, Isaac still loves that Texas teether. Absolutely loves it, almost as much as his Sophie.

So congratulations Lyons family, you have an adorable little girl and we can’t wait to see her at church soon!

6. Months. Old.

By adam · Comments (0)
Monday, January 17th, 2011

How times flies.

This Sunday our little fellow turned half a year old.  I know they say that they grow up so fast, but it seems like hogwash until it’s actually happening.  6 months into his life he can roll from back to stomach and stomach to back (though he likes to forget how to do that), he’s babbling, laughing, smiling, cooing, jumping in his jumperoo, sitting up and goodness knows how many other things aren’t coming to mind right away.

That’s a long ways from this little guy.

Isaac at BirthSo what does such a baby look like 6 months later?  Like a little man.

Isaac at 6 MonthsInsane.

We celebrated by going to church to see our new Pastor’s first Sunday.  It’s nice to have a permanent Pastor in place and it was even better to be back at the 11am service.  What can I say, Erin and I just aren’t contemporary worship people the way it’s currently done.  After church, Robyn, Roger (hey hey, someone actually had an afternoon off!), Barrett and Hunter came over for a “birthday” lunch.  Erin whipped up some homemade macaroni and cheese and fried some chicken strips and we had a nice, healthy lunch with brownies and ice cream for dessert.  Just to polish off the healthy, heart conscious meal, Roger brought some Shiner Spring Ale.  It was delicious (all of it).

Later in the afternoon Isaac had his second taste of rice cereal (more on that soon) and followed that up with a Skype featuring Granny and Papa Schroeder.  That lasted until my battery died (so about 5 minutes, as my computer informed me today that my battery is horrible and needs to be replaced).

All in all a great celebration of 6 months of life.

At the Table with Mom and Dad

By adam · Comments (0)
Saturday, January 15th, 2011

Now that Isaac is sitting up decently well, we decided it was time to put him in his high chair and see how things went there.  Since he’s turning 6 months old this weekend (good grief!) we decided to start him on solids over the weekend and figured he needed some practice in the chair before he was sitting in it AND eating.

Erin had a tear or two sneak out when he was sitting in his chair.  He’s not such a little baby any more, he’s growing up.

He did a great job his first time in the chair.  He played with his toys while we had our waffles and sausage dinner (DELICIOUS!).

Isaac's First High Chair AdventureYes, he’s a big time drooler still.  That shirt was decimated by drool over the day.  Good thing I put an undershirt on him.  It was quick dad thinking, I know.

It’s almost like he knew what he would be doing in the chair.  Before we could even put his toys in front of him to play with Isaac was already quick at work.

Isaac Eating His High Chair

While we were taking pictures of Isaac in his high chair, Erin noticed that Isaac is starting to pose for the camera a little bit.  Only 6 months old and he’s already figured out how to work the red carpet.

That’s all for now.  I’ll leave you with a gallery of his pictures while I go off to play rugby and buy a putty scraper for the upcoming joy.

Our First Children’s Museum Visit

By adam · Comments (0)
Thursday, January 13th, 2011

For Christmas we got a membership to the Houston Children’s Museum.  Isaac had never been to the museum before since he wasn’t exactly old enough to do anything so it wasn’t worth the money, but I figured since we had the membership I’d introduce Isaac to the museum.  And what better way for him to see how to fully enjoy the museum than going with Aunt Robyn and his cousins?

Answer: NONE.

Isaac slept a little long, so we got there after Robyn and the boys, but we wasted no time catching up with them.  As soon as we got their Aunt Robyn wanted to see her nephew.

Robyn and Isaac at the Children's MuseumIsaac was so excited to see her and the boys that he pooped his pants.  Thankfully, since it’s the CHILDREN’S Museum, the Men’s restroom had a changing table in it.  One diaper change later and we were back at it.  The nephews were doing what they do best, playing in the cars.

Hunter Driving the AmbulanceI didn’t get any of Barrett because he was always off somewhere else with Robyn making sure he didn’t get into any trouble.  I got to chill with Hunter, mostly at either this ambulance or in the police car.

Hunter in the Police CarI don’t know how well you can see that, but another kid was “driving” when we got there so Hunter waited his turn by sitting in the back seat.  He did a really great job waiting his turn and giving other kids a turn at driving the cars.

After a little while downstairs it was time to go upstairs to the Tot Spot.  Now technically Barrett is too old to go in, but since Hunter is still young enough (for another year and a few months) he was allowed in under the condition that Robyn never let him out of sight.  No problem with Barrett because he only wanted to do one thing really.

Barrett filling up the carMeanwhile Hunter did what he knows best.  He drove the other car, which brilliantly has two steering wheels.  Hope they don’t want to go different directions!

Hunter Driving the 2 Steering Wheel CarWhen it was time for Hunter to share his spot in the car he wasn’t really thrilled about it, so Robyn and I put on our quick thinking cap and gave Hunter a job.  Isaac had never seen the lights put in the wall before, maybe Hunter could show him how it was done?  Well, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!

Hunter Teaching IsaacIsaac didn’t quite get it.  He just wanted to put them in his mouth.

After watching the cousins play for a little bit, it was time for Isaac to go play in his little spot.  There’s a place in the Tot Spot that has Bumbos and toys for little bitties like Isaac.  He had a good time.

Isaac at Play in the Children's MuseumI didn’t really trust the toys around the floor since there was a sign saying something along the lines of “If you see a kid put a toy in their mouth put it in this bag” so I gave Isaac his Texas to play with while sitting in their Bumbo.

Isaac and his Texas at the MuseumThen we did some standing/sitting on the mat they had.  As you can see below , Isaac was getting pretty good at almost sitting on his own.

Isaac and Daddy at the Children's MuseumShortly after this picture was taken I stood Isaac up to look at the pictures of babies that you see on the wheel behind him.  Now Isaac LOVES other babies.  He stares at them and smiles when we’re out, he smiles at the magical baby in the mirror and just loves everything about them.  These babies, however, not so much.  What’s awful about them is that all of the babies are sad or crying.  None of them are smiling.  Why would you do that?

After the Tot Spot it was back downstairs for a little while before everyone headed home for lunch and a nap.  On the way out, however, we had to pass the cow, which Barrett and Hunter wanted to milk.  Hunter wanted to ride it as well but that got squashed pretty quick.

Barrett and the Cow Hunter and the Cow

All in all it was a successful journey to the Museum.  It should get even better as Isaac gets older and can play with more of the things in the Tot Spot.  Pretty soon he’ll be walking around downstairs with the cousins playing in the cars.
